What Do The Amazing Race Racers Wear? Season 39 Packing Rules and the One-Bag Kit
This weekThe Amazing Race is not on yet. CBS runs an Entertainment Tonight retrospective, The Amazing Race: 25 Years Around the World, on Tuesday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. ET, and season 39 starts the night after that. Four other competition premieres land first — see the Sept. 21–27 grid.

Every other show on this site dresses its cast. The Amazing Race makes the cast pack for itself. Thirteen teams leave Vancouver carrying one bag each, with no phone, no map app and none of their own money in it, and whatever went into that bag has to last a month across five continents. The constraint does the styling. You end up in stretch fabric because stretch fabric is what washes in a hotel sink and dries by morning.

So this is the rare competition show where the wardrobe is not a costume department's decision. It is a luggage decision, and you can copy it.

Phil Keoghan hosts, the prize is still $1 million, and the gimmick this year is that every one of the 13 teams starts with an Express Pass and has to burn it by the end of leg six. Twelve legs, nine countries, roughly 25,000 miles.

What are racers allowed to pack?

ItemStatusWhat it does to the wardrobe
Phone, GPS, smartwatch, cameraBannedNo weather app, so you dress for a guess, not a forecast
Guidebooks, phrasebooksBannedNothing to look up local dress codes with once you land
Your own cash or cardsBannedA shirt that falls apart in Morocco does not get replaced
Clothing for any climateAllowedEvery garment has to earn its weight twice over
Laundry and toiletry minisAllowedThis is the whole reason two tops are enough
Medication and a small medical kitEncouragedOften with cards explaining the contents in other languages

Executive producer Elise Doganieri has said racers get briefed on the cultures they are heading into, so they know when to watch what they wear. There is no published rule about logos, and we are not going to invent one — what you can see on screen is that brand marks are rarely legible, which is as far as the evidence goes.

What did a real racer actually carry?

Kim Holderness won season 33 with her husband Penn and posted her list afterward. It is startlingly short.

CategoryWhat she packed
TopsTwo tank tops
Base layerTwo sports bras
BottomsOne pair of leggings, one pair of shorts
Socks and underwearTwo pairs of each
OuterwearA lightweight jacket and a puffy coat
ShoesSneakers, plus water shoes that doubled as airplane slippers
BagA 22-litre Deuter Speed Lite, with square packing cubes
Target weightUnder nine pounds

Nine pounds is the number worth holding on to. She practice-packed, then went for a long run wearing the thing to find out what she had got wrong while there was still time to fix it.

Why do racers wear the same outfit for days?

Because two tank tops across twelve legs means the laundry happens every night, in a sink, by hand. Holderness used Tide packs, wrung the wet clothes out inside a towel, then pointed a hairdryer at whatever was still damp. That routine is the actual reason the on-screen wardrobe repeats, and it filters back into what gets packed in the first place: nothing that needs a machine, nothing that holds water, nothing that shows a salt ring when it dries badly.

Which fabrics survive a sink wash?

FabricSink testDry time overnight
Nylon-elastane blendsGood — sheds water when wrungUsually dry by morning
Polyester jerseyGood, but holds odourFast
Merino woolBest for wearing twice before washingSlow when thick
Cotton tanksPoor — heavy wet, slow dryOften still damp

Does a nine-country route change the kit?

It has to. The season starts in Vancouver and ends in Honolulu, and in between it passes through Spain, Morocco, Albania, Sri Lanka, Laos, Australia and New Zealand — a first visit to Albania for the franchise, and the first time the race has skipped the contiguous United States entirely.

Stretch of the routeWhat the bag has to handle
Vancouver, autumnCold mornings — this is what the puffy coat is for
Spain and MoroccoHeat by day, cover-up for conservative settings
AlbaniaMountain and coast in the same leg
Sri Lanka and LaosHumidity — nothing dries, so quantity will not save you
Australia and New ZealandWind and rain; the light jacket does the work
HonoluluBack to one layer

Seen from the packing list, the two jackets stop looking like overkill. They are the only two items on it that cannot be improvised from something else.

What about the shoes?

One pair of sneakers, worn rather than carried, and a flat water shoe that folds down to nothing. The water shoe is the clever part of the list: it covers swimming tasks, wet stone steps and the long flights where you want your feet out of laced trainers. Nobody has room for a second pair of real shoes, which is why you almost never see a racer in anything but the shoes they arrived in.

Where else does this kind of kit show up?

Travel-weight activewear overlaps with almost everything else on this channel. Survivor 51 castaways face the same salt-and-sun problem with even less to wear, and The Challenge competitors get a team colour on top of it. The grip-and-water breakdown in the competition-show training kit covers what the fabric is actually being asked to do, and Ninja Warrior's sleeve problem is the same argument in one garment. If you are trying to name something you spotted on screen, start with construction details rather than the brand; more matches sit under Shop the Look, and the fall calendar is in what this site covers. Sizing, if you are between two, is handled by our sizing sister site. For the race itself rather than the clothes, the fall 2026 reality guide is the place.
