What Shoes Do Survivor Contestants Wear? Barefoot Challenges, Water Shoes, Winners' Picks
This week — Survivor 51 premieres Wednesday, Sept. 23, 8–10 p.m. ET on CBS and Paramount+, then settles into 90 minutes from Sept. 30. The rest of the week's competition grid is in our Sept. 21–27 schedule.

Quick answer: Survivor players are allowed shoes. They pack them with the rest of their wardrobe, which production approves before filming. What you notice on screen is how often the shoes come off: a lot of players run challenges barefoot, because balance beams, wet planks and sand reward bare feet or a very thin sole. The players who have talked about their footwear afterwards mostly chose flat, flexible water shoes rather than trainers.

That is the one piece of sportswear on this show that actually earns its place. The clothes are mostly street clothes in a tribe colour, as our Survivor 51 wardrobe page explains. The feet are a different story.

Are Survivor contestants allowed to wear shoes?

Yes. Former players and the fan-maintained rulebook describe footwear going through the same approval as everything else a castaway brings: no visible logos, colours that sit inside the tribe palette. Nobody has published a CBS rule that bans shoes in challenges, and several winners have competed in them.

The occasional surprise is how comfortable some pairs are. PureWow's writer was startled in April 2025 to see Survivor 48 runner-up Eva Erickson in a thick foam recovery slide during a confessional, and identified it as an OOFOS. That is one outlet's identification, so treat the brand as reported rather than confirmed.

The cost is the ground itself. Reef, shell and coral cut feet, and a cut on day four stays wet for the rest of the game. That trade-off is why the shoes players do bring tend to look like the ones in the price table below.

Lacina called hers "lightweight, quick-drying and with excellent water drainage." Gabler said he avoided anything with a big foam platform because it would not help his balance, and he went sockless or used wool socks depending on how wet things were. Neither shoe carries a large logo, which is probably not an accident.

What does a Survivor-style water shoe cost?

Prices were checked on each brand's own website on Tuesday, Sept. 22, 2026, at about 11:55 p.m. ET. These are the women's versions; men's versions and sale colours can be priced differently. Nothing here is claimed to be what a Survivor 51 player wears.

Lacina's exact 3T model was not listed on Body Glove's own shop when we checked, and Gabler's Xcursion Fusion did not come up in Xero's current catalogue, so neither is in the table.

If you are moving to thin soles from cushioned trainers, build up slowly. Calves and arches take a few weeks to adjust, which is one reason the obstacle crowd on American Ninja Warrior tends to stay in grippy trainers instead.

How do other competition shows handle feet?

Each show solves it differently. The Amazing Race runs on the one-bag packing kit, so racers usually pick a single trail shoe.
