Do Survivor Contestants Change Clothes? The Spare Set, Sea-Water Laundry and Replacements

Quick answer: Mostly no. A Survivor player wears one approved outfit on camera for most of the game, and it gets washed rather than swapped. Production keeps an identical spare set off camera and replaces pieces that tear or go missing. Since the new era began, players have said they are allowed more than one outfit on the island, but on screen it still looks like the same clothes, day after day.

That is why the wardrobe has to be tough. The clothes on the Survivor 51 beach went through crates and a cargo net in Wednesday's first immunity challenge, and they will keep going through salt water, sand and campfire smoke for weeks.

Do Survivor contestants get more than one outfit?

It depends on the era, and the rules have loosened over time.

Does production keep a spare set?

Yes. Karishma Patel told Insider in 2021 that production has "a second complete set" of each player's clothes, identical to the first, in case something happens. The spare exists so the look stays the same on television. A player who rips a shirt on day eight should still look like themselves on day nine.

Replacements happen, and players remember them. Malcolm Freberg lost a sandal a few days into Survivor: Philippines and got a new one, which he called a big deal. Elaine Stott asked for new underwear around day 30 because weight loss had made hers unwearable.

How do Survivor players wash their clothes?

With whatever is on the beach. The methods players have described are not glamorous.

Salt water cleans a little and dries stiff. Cotton holds water for hours. That is a large part of why players' shirts look faded and shapeless by the merge.

What happens when clothes rip or stop fitting?

Two things wear clothes out on this show: challenges and weight loss. Challenges tear seams and knees. Weight loss is slower and worse, because waistbands that fit on day one can be falling off by the jury phase. Stott's underwear request is the clearest example on record of production swapping a piece for fit rather than damage.

Why can't players just bring quick-dry clothes?

Because production does not allow them. Reality Blurred's rundown of the clothing rules lists quick-dry and waterproof fabric among the banned items, alongside logos and white shirts. The show wants a lawyer to look like a lawyer, and a technical hiking shirt makes everyone look the same. Off the island, nobody is stopping you. If you want one pair of shorts you can rinse in the sea and wear again an hour later, this is the fabric to look for.

What quick-dry shorts work for a beach trip?

Prices were checked on each brand's own website on Wednesday, Sept. 23, 2026, at about 11:55 p.m. ET. These are women's styles; sale prices and colours change often. None of these is claimed to be worn by a Survivor 51 player.
