What to Wear for a Mud Run: What Special Forces Season 5 Gets Right

Quick answer — Wear snug, full-length synthetic tights, a fitted long-sleeve synthetic top, and old trail shoes that drain water. Skip cotton, loose shorts and anything white. Cotton holds water and mud and gets heavy. Loose fabric catches on rope, netting and barbed-wire crawls. Dark colors hide what the course does to them.
What do Special Forces recruits wear in the mud?
In FOX's season 5 promos, recruits crawl through mud in plain dark tops and full-length pants, with camouflage patrol caps on some tasks. Nobody wears shorts. There are no visible brand logos, and FOX has not named a supplier. Our Special Forces season 5 hub has the cast, the episode schedule to the Nov. 12 finale and what happened in the premiere.
The kit follows a simple logic that carries over to a weekend race: cover the skin, keep it tight, keep it dark.
Should you wear leggings or shorts to a mud run?
Leggings, for most people. Full-length tights protect knees and shins on crawls and on rough walls, and they keep grit off your skin. Shorts are cooler on a hot summer course, but the crawling sections punish bare knees.
| Choice | Good for | Problem |
|---|---|---|
| Full-length synthetic tights | Crawls, rope climbs, cold water | Warmer on a hot day |
| 7/8 tights | Most fall races | A strip of ankle for mud to reach |
| Compression shorts | Hot, fast courses with few crawls | Scraped knees |
| Loose running shorts | Nothing on this course | Fill with mud, snag on netting |
| Cotton sweatpants | Nothing on this course | Soak up water and sag |
Why is cotton the wrong fabric?
Cotton absorbs water and holds it. After the first water pit, a cotton T-shirt can hang off you and stay cold for the rest of the race. Nylon and polyester blends with some spandex take on far less water, so they shed it and dry while you run.
The same fabric logic shows up across competition TV. We walked through it for American Ninja Warrior competitors and for The Challenge cast.

What should you wear on top?
| Top | When it works |
|---|---|
| Fitted long-sleeve synthetic shirt | Courses with crawls, netting and cold water; the closest match to Special Forces kit |
| Fitted synthetic tank or tee | Hot afternoons with little crawling |
| Sports bra with enough coverage to wear alone | Hot courses, under a top you can peel off |
| Loose race-day cotton tee | Before and after, not on the course |
Tight means tight at the hem and cuffs too. Anything that flaps can catch on a wall or a rope, which is also why the jungle kit on the show has nothing hanging from it.
What shoes work best for a mud run?
An older pair of trail running shoes with aggressive lugs and a mesh upper that drains. Road shoes with shallow tread slide in wet clay. Tie a double knot and tuck the laces, because suction mud can pull a loose shoe off. Socks should be synthetic or wool, never cotton. Our Survivor footwear breakdown covers wet-sand and water shoes from the other side.
What do good mud run tights cost?
Prices checked on each brand's own site on Thursday, Sept. 24, 2026, about 11:55 p.m. ET. Stock by size changes daily.
| Tier | Tights | Price | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Budget | Baleaf Flyleaf Seamless Leggings, Black, about 25.8" inseam in size L (XS–2XL listed) | $32.00 | 80% nylon, 20% spandex, flatlock seams, two side pockets and a back waistband pocket. Brushed and soft, so it may hold a little more grit than a slick knit. |
| Mid | Senita Athletics Boost Leggings, 26", Navy/Orchid Camo (XS–XXL in stock) | $45.00 | Compressive Lux fabric, deep side pockets, no front seam. The camo print hides mud but is louder than plain black. |
| Premium | Janji Women's 7/8 Trail Tight, Midnight (XXS–L and XXL in stock) | $114.00 | Light compression, laser-cut hems and a lot of pockets, including a key clip. Built for long trail runs, so it is more tights than most single races need. |
For a single race, the budget or mid pair makes sense. If you already trail run, the premium pair earns its price over many outings. Rinse any of them with cold water before the washing machine so grit does not grind the fibers.
What should you pack for after the race?
| Item | Why |
|---|---|
| Full change of clothes and dry shoes | Wet synthetic cools you fast once you stop moving |
| Trash bag | For muddy kit, and to sit on in the car |
| Towel and a jug of water | Rinse stations at events can have lines |
| Flip-flops | Easier than tying shoes over wet feet |
On TV, production handles this for the recruits. How long shows keep contestants in one outfit is covered in do Survivor contestants change clothes.
FAQ
Can I wear a hoodie to a mud run? Not a cotton one. It turns heavy after the first water section. A thin synthetic long sleeve does the job.
Will mud come out of leggings? Usually, if you rinse them before they dry and wash them cold. Light colors may stain for good, which is one more reason to wear dark.
Do I need gloves? They help on rope and rough walls. Pick fitted gloves that grip when wet; loose work gloves can slip off.
Is it worth buying new clothes for one race? Only if you own nothing synthetic. Old tights and a worn tech shirt are fine, since mud is hard on fabric.
